The Man Behind Indonesia's First-Ever Cannes Prize


Wregas Bhanutedja is a 23 year-old director who recently became the first-ever Indonesian to win a Cannes Film Festival Award with his short film Prenjak/In The year of The Monkey

Teaming up with high school friends and his girlfriend, Wregas out on top in the prestigious festival with the Leica Cine Discovery prize - an award from the Critics Week Category given to new talents in short film.

"We believe that what we do this year will be great. This year is the year of the Fire Monkey," said Wregas, adding he and his friends were born in 1992, who is also the Year of the Monkey. 
According to the Chinese zodiac, people born in the year of the monkey will succeed in the year 0f the fire monkey.

For followers of Indonesian cinema, Wregas is not a new face because he has been involved in several films of the silver screen, such as Sokola Rimba (Jungle School) and Ada Apa Dengan Cinta 2 (AADC 2). Both were created by prominent and producer-director dynamic duo Mira Lesmana and Riri Reza.

Before working on big movie, Wregas along with his magical ideas, collect prizes in several local and Intenational competition for short films, which often carry a profound message in their lighthearted plots.
