The suicide bomber attacked the Surakarta Police Headquaters

Jakarta, Indonesia

A suicide bomber has detonated an explosive device in front of police headquaters in Surakarta, Central Java this morning, a policeman was injured, said a police representative. Unidentified suicide bomber is reported to have died due to injuries sustained in the attack.

The suicide bomber attempted to enter the Central Java Police complex on a motorcycle at around 7.30am, Central Java Police chief Insp. Gen. Condro Kirono told Kompas TV.

The suspect was intercepted by an officer, but fled.

"The suspect had been acting suspiciously and an officer chased him. Shortly after he fled the scene, the bomb exploded. It was a low-explosive bomb," said Condro.

The suspect was killed while the officer suffered minor injuries, he added.

The attack allegedly occurred a few hours after a series of bombings that have been set in three cities in Saudi Arabia, including in the Medina, which is regarded as an Islamic holy site. The attacks in Saudi Arabia caused four people dead, followed by a bloody week of bomb attacks in Turkey, Bangladesh and Iraq.

Authorities are still investigating the motive behind the attack. It is believed that The Islamic State (IS) militant group, which has vowed to increase attacks outside iraq and Syria, may have been responsible.

On January 14, IS claimed responsibility for the attacks in Central Jakarta, which killed four civilians and four attackers.
