6,5 Magnitude Earthquake Hit Sumatra


A 6,5 magnitude earthquake hit the Southern coast of Sumatra early morning today. There are no reports of injuries or damage and no tsunami warning was issued.

Spokesman for the National Disaster Mitigation Agency, Sutopo Purwo Nugroho recorded that the quake occurred at a depth of 72 kilometers in the sea, about 79 kilometers Southwest of the Southern coast of West Sumatra or 115 kilometers Northwest of the sea Muko-Muko in Bengkulu.

"The earthquake was triggered by the activity of subduction of the Indo-Australian plate and Eurasian above the Benioff zone." Sutopo said in a statement on Thursday morning.

He added that a strong tremor was reported on the South Shore of West Sumatra and Muko-Muko district of Bengkulu about 20 to 30 seconds, so as to make people panic and escaped from their homes.

The quake was also felt by people in Padang, capital of West Sumatra and other nearby towns such as Bukit Tinggi and Padang Panjang.

Sutopo said that a small shock was also felt in South Solok, Jambi, North Bengkulu, Padang Pariaman, Pekanbaru, Pasaman and Tanah Datar.

"The impact and losses caused by the earthquake is till being collected by the agency," He added.
