Beware of The Growing Phenomenon of Gang Rape

Chairman of The National Commission for Child Protection (Komnas PA), Arist Merdeka Sirait said, "the Indonesian people have to stay alert against gang rape, a growing phenomenon in Indonesia."

"The perpetrators of rape are not only adults but also children," he added.

"The latest rape case happened to a 12 years girl who are still in the sixth grade who was rape by six youths and has shocked all of us. Previously, a similar case occurred in Bengkulu that happened to a junior high school student who was raped by 14 youths and then killed. Another cases occurred in Tangerang (Banten), North Sumatra, Pemalang (Central Java) and several other areas throughout Indonesia. We must fight against this crime," said Arist after he met with the six perpetrators of rape in a police station in Semarang, Cental Java on Wednesday, May 1.

Arist has also met with a female victim who was reportedly raped on three seperate occasions between May 7 to May 21. He said , "the victim who had just finished the final exams in a good condittion,"

"The minimum punishment is 10 years imprisonment while the maximum is 20 years, the penalty can be increased to life imprisonment. If the sex crimes has planned and involves the murder, the offender can be sentenced to death," Arist added
