A co-pilot and flight attendant had failed a drug test conducted by the authority of Soekarno-Hatta airport ahead of Eid, police said on Wednesday.
Deputy chief for community empowerment of the National Narcotics Agency (BNN), Insp.Gen. Bachtiar, said the two aircrew, who worked for different unidentified airlines, were proven to use drugs, according to the results of a urine test.
"We're still running the tests for the co-pilot and flight attendants. Although (they failed a drug test), we will dig deeper into the lab. Then, we will report it to the Ministry of Transportation Directorate General of air transportation," Bachtiar told reporters in Tangerang on Wednesday.
He said the two admitted that they had been taking medication to cure themselves of some diseases. And they may not know that there are drugs that contain amphetamine. "Even if they really feel unwell, they don't have to fly and endanger flight safety."
The Ministry of Transportation has launched a series of drug tests for bus drivers, machinists and the flight crew to ensure the safety of Lebaran exodus, known as mudik.
Around 17,6 million people are expected to start for the exodus this weekend as the government and private offices take a week off during the Eid holidays.
